The next big step for bitcoin comes in early 2016, when the rate of bitcoin emission drops by half, to 1500 a day. That will reduce the pressure on the price from emission, but will also slash the incomes of bitcoin miners, who collectively maintain the bitcoin network. The mining industry currently earns about $1m a year; with a stable bitcoin price it will earn about $500k a year starting in 2016. Bitcoin VC investors assumed the price bitcoin would continue to skyrocket, which if true would keep mining industry income stable. When reality hits in 2016 and mining income halves, a lot of miners are going to close up shop and drop out. Mining will be consolidated by a handful of high-efficiency miners.
