The first Thai funeral I attended was for the mother of Neung and it's for her that I have made my first tambuun. It has been another fascinating encounter. Death is managed by the Thai folks with plenty of respect, wit, tact and elegance. That is an odd blend of words perhaps but it's an appropriate mix. I enjoy the way and I like to believe that Neung's mom would have been pleased with what she saw now. I don't pretend to understand Buddhism or Thailand culture, but what I do view I like very much.
The chanting stops the monks arrived early, and I learn. We're their lunch. I'm told that the monks eat twice a day, breakfast and lunch and they might not eat after noon. They turned up early to be certain that they could get lunch. That makes perfect sense to me. After all, this country more than most, marches on its belly. Lunch is a feast. A mass of different foods. They eat, we wait. Everyone looks happy and there's a large amount of laughing from everyone.
As far as skills go, I must say I believe the focus these days has to be on technology, multilingualism, problem-solving and critical thinking skills. Our children will be made to face challenges that we cannot even imagine at this point. They must have the capacity to think for themselves. I also think we're going to have to face challenges with a humanitarian and world-wide perspective, so the abilities will soon be worthless without the character traits I mentioned first.
