The actual story began in 1942 when Eric Lomax was held prisoner in a Japanese war camp. Lomax managed to locate Japanese interpreter Takashi Nagase. After a couple weeks, when "Pedro" was feeling a little better, I inquired at the school about getting a tutor to visit his home. The response I kept receiving was that he didn't have the necessary paperwork to qualify for a tutor. I asked his teacher to gather needed materials up and I began going to his house to work with him. I felt it'd be better than nothing although I'm not a certified teacher. Eventually he was approved for a coach, but it was challenging to locate a teacher to really go to his house, which epitomizes the word "poverty." It is overrun with cockroaches and is among the darkest, most depressing places I Have ever been in. Finally one courageous soul made a few visits at the conclusion of the school year. But by then he'd missed so much school which he had to repeat first grade.

They had a nice house in an area that is good and were thought of. They'd two teenage daughters who were born in America, and knew nothing about Mexico. Yet the whole family was yanked up and deported. Why? My guess is, to make an example of them. Of course the girls wouldn't be pressured to leave, but if their parents were deported, what choice did they have? I'll come back to that later.
