Most runners that say that they don't like running on a treadmill will probably also admit that there are days when you should be running on them. Make sure that you are wearing good running shoes on your treadmill just as you would if you were running outdoors. You never want to run on a treadmill in your barefeet. As with running outside, you need to wear running shoes to support your feet, knees and legs.

Just as if you were hitting the roads, you want to warm up however you do when you run outside. If you do a series of stretches, make sure you still do them before you start running on the treadmill. If you just start running - but do so slowly as your warm up - do the same on your treadmill.

When you start the treadmill, you want to be straddling the belt by standing on the deck. Start the treadmill slowly - and then step on. After you start moving, then you can increase the speed to where you want it to be.

As with running outdoors, you want to make sure that you are looking straight ahead instead of at your feet. Actually, it may be even more important as looking at your feet on the moving treadmill belt could cause you to be dizzy. I have a TV in front of mine - this keeps me looking straight - and also helps with any boredom that I may get from running inside.

Make sure that you are keeping up good running form on the treadmill. Watch your stride and arm swing. Do not run while holding onto the side rails. This will cause you to alter your running and can cause injury.

There are definitely times when a treadmill is a great place to get your runs in. Just make sure that you are using it safely.
