One thing is for sure is that NBC debuted this on a Thursday in place of "ER." This move alone I must applaud. Never has there been a show (at least not since "Married...with Children") that has so out-stayed its welcome. "ER" has become this bloated, non-sensical mess over the past few seasons and it shows no sign of stopping. I am sorry but there is a better medical show on right before "ER" and it is on ABC and called "Grey's Anatomy." That show has better stories, better characters and better music.

We love the fact that, during August, it can get so hot that hundreds of elderly and sick people will die in their apartments. Again, this culls the herd, we figure, and just leaves those of us capable of handling the heat able to move around a bit more. Sure, we can also spend a few hours knocking on doors and distributing fans, but how much does a window fan really do when it's 104 degrees with 100% humidity.

Sometimes your child might have to face just one bully. The other eleven articles in this twelve-article series will be most helpful in that situation. Sadly, sometimes children have to face a gang of bullies. This is extremely challenging and hard since that gang often operates under a mob mentality where it appears that there is little you can do stop or stall them.

We also take a perverse pride in the fact that O'Hare Airport is a mess to get around in. At one time it was the busiest airport in the world but it has since been eclipsed by others. Still, we do all we can to make running from one side of the place to the other as difficult as possible. This builds character, we say.

Eliot Spitzer. A crusading New York attorney general with prostitution in his sights, he fell from grace as governor by falling into the arms of a high-priced call girl, and paid for it with funds that weren't even his. Problem: call girl? No, probably not. The fact that he was using our money for his pleasure...OK. That one's a legitimate gripe, and a legitimate reason for exposing his peccadillo, or whatever you care to call it.

Jeff Goldblum is such an engaging and likeable guy, though, that the show still manages to entertain. There was even a relatively nice surprise at the end that managed to surprise even me and I can usually spot things like that a mile away. There are some touching moments mixed with some hard-edged moments as Raines delves into the sleazy lives of prostitutes and blackmailers and pimps and the kind of people who manage motels where those types hang out.
